Movie Opener Brainstorming and Research

Rise : There are a lot of extreme close ups in this clip, followed by quick zooms and panning shots. The audience hears the upbeat music prevalent which stimulates a feeling of excitement only for that music to change and create tension for the situation unfolding.

Dear Lover: The audience hears happy music, followed by a demonstration of the romance between both characters, a voice over is then introduced that connects the audience with the characters even more. The ending leaves the audience wanting more.

Dare to Thrill: The piece begins with a lot of daring action and carefully deployed music. However, as the video progresses the point and actions become muddled and confusing.

A suspense ridden video that is very exposition heavy for an opening scene. A lot of close character portraits as well.

White Coat: The video opens with a series of rapid cuts that communicates the character’s own confusion. This intro is a great way to grab the viewer's attention, the deployment of sound and music is also used to superb effect.

Stalker: The blend of drama and horror in the piece is fascinating. The video’s use of sound and music in the beginning creates a very deep sense of tension.

Nostalgia: The opening of the film cuts between paintings and characters to introduce its narrative.

Summary: After looking through the wealth of amazing student-produced videos I can say that it taught me a lot about independent media. One of the biggest things that I picked up was how integral the mood and music were in order to gain the audience's attention. Whether it be a series of quick cuts or an upbeat song placed at the start of the video I shouldn't waste a second of the audience's attention. For my opening scene I realized how important it is to get the audience's attention.
